1981 Liliana Cavani’s Skin is an adaptation of a novel by Curzio Malaparte – Italian writer and journalist, war correspondent during the Second World War. It is a film about two kinds of fascism: the one ideological, coming from outside and somehow dictated, but also about fascism which is internal, psychological, and becomes a part of all people despite the fact one can’t accept neither its existence nor force. Action takes part in Naples 1943 just after the city had been liberated by American army. In an absolutely uncompromising way Cavani shows a dramatic meeting of the winners and the defeated. Prostitution is spreading around: mothers sell their daughters to the soldiers for a few cents; German prisoners sell everything that had left, including themselves… It is a shocking picture of the tragic consequences of war in human consciousness, as well as juxtaposition of two different civilizations and cultures – Anglo-Saxon and Latin.
