Maldito Tango, the Cursed Tango in Janowiec
22/07/2011
Tango does whatever it wants with us – wrote José Luis Borges, observing the revolution started by Carlos Gardel, considered by Argentinians the greatest of those who have ever sung tango and one of the genre’s greatest composers.
New life was breathed into the spirit of Argentinian dance, music, and philosophy as well, by Daniel Melingo. His appearance marked the beginning of a true revolution. What was its nature? That is precisely what we want to show to the Polish audience.
We know that it takes two to tango, but we go further to paraphrase this and say that it takes Two Riversides. That is why the Festival’s 5th edition – on 30th July – will be opened with a concert of Daniel Melingo, a musician who boldly presents the tango to the world, challenging both tradition and modernity. Journalists often call him an artistic scoundrel with diabolical sensitivity.
Melingo has always been searching for inspiration in his surroundings. Breathing Buenos Aires air, there he found the Argentinian equivalent of the Parisian Montmartre. He absorbed people, events, stories. Tango has always had a soft spot for the unfortunate, Melingo understands their dilemmas. He claims that tango is like balancing: you can sway and bend, but you must keep your balance.
He will appear at Two Riversides with his band – “a gang of rogues,” as he often calls them. They orchestrate nothing onstage – tango does with them whatever it wants! And what can it do? We will see for ourselves on July 30th at the castle in Janowiec. You are also welcome to see the TVP2 broadcast – on Sunday, July 31st at 11:20 pm.
