The plot of Grzegorz Królikiewicz feature debut “Through and Through” is based on real events that took place in Kraków 1933.  Two life castaways, Maria and Jan, meet in a drunkard place in suburbs. Soon Jan looses his job and despite his efforts he cannot find a new one. After a lonely wedding they both live in poverty, ignored and humiliated even by the immediate family: after a quarrel with his brother Jan and Maria have to move out from the house of their mother, loosing their last point of support. Full of grievances against the world, ultimately they murder three old and defenseless people and for the earned money they buy a short stay in a luxury hotel. “Through and through” is as important as difficult, probably because of it’s emotional coolness and the lack of unequivocal moral evaluation. It caused extreme reactions, from admiration of critics to reactions close to lynching that took place in cinemas during the films first displays.
