“If your mother can’t remember who you are,” says one of the characters of Carers, “then she’s no longer your mother.” Oskar Tejedor’s documentary shows the emotional and physical consequences of coping with Alzheimer’s, but rather emphasizes the human spirit’s ability to triumph over suffering. Patients featured range from those in the early stages of the disease to those who are beyond all communication. However the main heroes of the film are not them, but their anonymous caretakers, whose meetings, grouped by topic of discussion, provide the film with a structure. The camera records their everyday efforts showing not only their bafflement, discouragement and stress, but also (perhaps most of all) their sense of humor, compassion and warmth.
