The Emigrants – the most prominent next to The Tango drama written by Sławomir Mrożek, has been published for the first time in 1974, and only few months later had it it’s world premiere with Gerard Depardieu and Laurent Terzieff starring. Mrożek’s drama is a kind of a contemporary moral play devoid of political allusions and extremely ascetic in form. Its action is limited to a dialog between two men: an intellectualist – political emigrant, and a worker – profit emigrant. Their conversation takes place in a tower block basement somewhere in the suburbs, during the New Year’s Eve. Their expectations from the West are different. The intellectual is looking for a spiritual freedom, the worker – material freedom, nevertheless the viewer knows that their dreams will remain in the sphere of illusions and self-deception.
