In an American zone of occupation major Steve Arnold investigates Wilhelm Furtwängler, an outstanding composer and conductor, who stayed in Germany despite the fact that Hitler had came to power. Furtwängler – considered a musical master, if not a genius, is accused of cooperating with Nudists. The American officer leading his case is a simple, “completely uncultured” man, name of the famous composer doesn’t mean anything for him – he tries to judge Furtwängler as a man, not as an artist. Ronald Hardwood’s drama, although its action is set in 1946 Berlin, can be interpreted as a universal analysis of ambiguous moral choices made by people living in totalitarian regimes. An analysis actual inasmuch it refers to postwar judgments as well as to still lasting post-communist inspections.
