The topic of this student competition is a design of Film Art Center, which is to be the permanent seat of “Two Shores” art film festival held annually in Kazimierz Dolny and Janowiec n.Wisłą. The competition was initiated in autumn 2010 by professor Ewa Kuryłowicz, supervisor of the Independent Laboratory of Design and Theory of Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture at Warsaw University of Technology. Implementation of this project was proposed to graduate students who applied to the Laboratory for the summer semester of 2010/2011, to one of three promoters working in the Laboratory: prof. Ewa Kuryłowicz, Radosław Achramowicz and Piotr Kudelski.
Plans for the construction of Film Center in Kazimierz Dolny have been discussed for some time. The inspirer was Grazyna Torbicka, the Artistic Director of the Festival Two Riversides, who has participated in organizing the contest, sat in the jury and took over the patronage, identifying functional needs of the Centre.
One of the most important aspects taken into consideration was ensuring that the characteristics of the object made it functional not only during the festival, but throughout the remainder of the year as well. Another very important requirement was contemporary interpretation of the unique genius loci of Kazimierz Dolny, supported by sociological, historical, demographic and anthropological studies. Movies were an equally important inspiration as other areas of creative human activity.
The competition program assumed that the Film Art Center should fulfill the exhibition, festival and commercial functions. The desirable size of the Centre is 2500 sq.m. Any supplemental ideas were authorized as part of the author’s expression.
After consultation with Grzegorz Duni, mayor of Kazimierz Dolny, who took patronage over the competition on the behalf of the City in December 2010, it was decided that the contestants may choose to develop the project on one of two locations: at the quarries or at the Kwaskowa Góra Street.
Winners will be announced during the opening of the exhibition of architectural projects, held on July 31st, 2011 at the UMCS College of Fine Arts in Kazimierz Dolny.
