Pablo Larraín

Chilean young generation director, emerged in Latin American cinema as a founder of a fully unique cinema d’auteur, characterized by personal style, a considerable amount of black humor ad an originally pictured vision of latest history. Larraín was born in Santiago, Chile 1976. After graduating from UNIACC University he founded his own film production company “Fabula” specializing in film and advertisement. It is within “Fabula”, that Larraín produced Sebastián Silva’s film “La Vida Me Mata” as well as his own debut “Fuga”.

Larraín’s debut, story of a composer both genius and mad, and an average music student Ricardo, is a modern variation on Peter Shaffer’s “Amadeus”, in which Ricardo, seeking to assign the achievements of missing composer, becomes another embodiment of demonical Salieri.

However, Larraín’s considerable international acclaim came along with his second feature, “Tony Manero”. After success in Cannes and New York Manero became Chilean Oscar candidate. “Tony Manero” is a dark satire on Pinochet’s Chile, “a country that turns its back on itself, in exchange for the dream of progress”- concluded Pablo Larrain.

In 2010 came Larraín’s last film – “Post Mortem”. It is a picture as witty, as unsettling, full of dark humor and style deriving from different film genres. Once again Alfredo Castro starring, this time as a shy clerk in love with his neighbor, cabaret dancer. Similarly to Manero, who incorporated some features of Chilean society, so do the emotional twists of both of the main “Post Mortem” characters reflect the time full of anxiety preceding the political 1973 “earthquake”.
